Description The Industry Placement B module comprises an internship of at least 12 weeks for Business Management with Industrial Placement and BSc International Business students; and at least 24 weeks for Business Management with Communications and Year in Industry students, as well as a 4000 word essay for which students will be very carefully prepared during the second third year of their programme. For the BSc International Business students, as they work abroad, the essay will be focused on their international work.

This Level I 60 credit module provides an opportunity to improve the student's understanding of the application of analytical frameworks to problems, issues and decision making in the context of real business management. The aim is to highlight the application of at least one functional discipline, such as Marketing, Communications, Procurement/Supply Chain Management, HRM, Accounting, Finance or Operations and identify macro-environmental factors relevant to the focus of the disciplinary application.

In addition, the importance of linking operational and functional analysis and decision making strategy will be emphasised through explicit consideration of the organisation's overall strategy and of the fit with the selected application.

Students will normally be expected to arrange placements themselves, but in consultation with and supported by Birmingham or SIM.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to:
  • Display knowledge of and experience in the application of disciplines appropriate to Business in context of the particular firm and its external environment (a broadly based view of business is taken, comprising for example economics, HRM, business organisation, international marketing, law, accounting and finance, supply chain management).
