Description Semester 1: Issues and Techniques in Contemporary Music: fortnightly seminars on a variety of substantial and influential works, analysis, aesthetic and perceptual issues and aspects of performance. The course requires extensive listening. Tutorials run alongside, preparing the first work in the composition portfolio, which will normally be workshopped and recorded by professional performers.

Semester 2: A tutorial course intended to monitor the preparation and completion of the composition folio, the second work of which will normally be written for an ensemble of at least 7 players. This piece will be workshopped and recorded by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) in the first week of the Summer Term.

Additional seminars, workshops and concerts as directed are an integral part of the course.

This module cannot be taken with LH Independent Study Paper Composition (22643)Prerequisite: Successful completion of 23573 LI Paper Composition, normally with a mark of at least 60
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to:
  • Produce original compositions that show an awareness of 20th/21st century developments and current trends in composition
  • Produce performance materials which are easily usable
  • Demonstrate a high level technical skill in instrumentation
  • Show a supporting knowledge and understanding of the historical and aesthetical development of 20th/21st century music.
Assessment 22643-01 : Large Ensemble : Coursework (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment: (100%) Composition folio, comprising 8-10’ music (equivalent to 6,000-8,000 words) plus additional short (300-500 words) commentaries on the works submitted. The portfolio may include supporting evidence such as plans, tables, analysis and conceptual ideas.
