Description The student will research and write a dissertation on a musicological topic of their choosing. The dissertation will be supervised by a member of staff in a series of tutorials running through semesters 1 and 2. Most areas of music are eligible as topic areas (western art musics, popular musics, world musics), as are many styles of analysis and interpretation (music history, music analysis, performance practice, ethnography, philosophy of music). That said, when choosing a topic is a good idea to bear in mind who in the department will supervise it, as dissertations on subjects that no full time member of staff can supervise, or that the library cannot support, will not be permitted.

The module will build on the skills acquired in musicological modules taken in Years 1 and 2 and may draw on the knowledge acquired but will emphasise the application of skills to a field of enquiry wholly or mainly new to the student.

Students must normally receive a mark of at least 60 in either 25658 Music Analysis or 25657 Critical Musicology to take this module.

This module may only be taken with 22642 Musicology (IS) if the fields of enquiry are contrasted.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a wide knowledge of the subject area chosen
  • Express views and opinions supported by evidence with cogency and accuracy
  • Identify the main scholarly views on the subject under investigation
  • Demonstrate an ability to produce assessed work independently, employing appropriate resources, literature and techniques
