This module examines the contexts - literary, cultural, political - of African literature in English (and in translation) by considering the work of several of the continent’s major writers who might be said to represent ‘the canon’ of African literature as it is taught and studied in universities around the world.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student will be able to:
Analyse key texts and literary processes relevant to the discussion of African literature.
Describe and appraise a broad selection of canonical African literature, in relation to relevant theoretical concepts and processes (including analysis of primary evidence where appropriate).
Compare and evaluate critically the main scholarly views on canonical African writing.
Evaluate and synthesise the literary and cultural contexts that relate to canonical African writing.
Work with a significant degree of learner independence to explain, analyse and evaluate the material under scrutiny in writing.
