Description This module explores the variety of approaches to the business of making literature in the circumstances of contemporary Africa that the continent’s writers have evolved in the last two decades.

We will look, for example, at writers’ responses to gender and sexuality, at the rise of genre fiction, and the ‘extroverted African novel’ and diaspora. The problems of constructing adequate and appropriate critical tools for the discussion of such work will be considered.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student will be able to:
  • Analyse key texts, themes and literary processes relevant to the discussion of contemporary African literature
  • Describe and appraise a selection of contemporary African literature in relation to relevant theoretical concepts and processes (including analysis of primary evidence where appropriate).
  • Compare and evaluate critically the main scholarly views on contemporary African writing.
  • Evaluate critically and synthesise the literary and cultural contexts that relate to contemporary African writing.
  • Work with a significant degree of learner independence to explain and analyse the material under scrutiny in writing.
