Description This module is undertaken by year 5 MBChB students and year 4 GEC students. In the module students spend 4 weeks undertaking an elective placement which is commonly overseas. On return they complete a written report. Locations vary from North American / Australian Universities running formal elective programmes in particular topics to specialist clinical experience in a particular centre of excellence, to rural health projects in sub-Saharan Africa. A small proportion of students choose to stay at home for either personal or financial reasons.

The type of elective project and therefore the nature of the report vary hugely. Projects may involve data collection or other research study (e.g. anthropological) but are often simply clinical and/or educational experience. Data collection reports follow the standard structure for a scientific report with details of method, analysis, conclusions etc. and other scientific studies would follow their own paradigm. Where students are undertaking a clinical or educational experience, they are required to produce a reflective report.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • demonstrate the ability to implement an appropriate investigative project for an elective by data collection, reflection, audit, service evaluation or any other appropriate method, in an unfamiliar learning environment.
  • demonstrate the ability to write a clear report in a style which is appropriate to the nature of the investigative project and the approach taken, including a review of the relevant literature.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

Students are required to submit a 3000 word report. The nature of the report will vary greatly depending on the type of project undertaken and could take the form of a scientific paper, editorial, anthropological report, case comparison, observational study, reflection.
