This module examines issues of inequity and social justice in Education. It draws upon research, policy and contemporary thinking in the field to provide an overview of the kinds of educational inequalities that can exist and persist across particular social groups. We will examine who benefits and does not benefit from education and the role of policy in affecting this. In particular, the module considers what contributes to educational inequalities and what might be done to interrupt them to produce an education system that is fairer and more inclusive.

Engage with key theoretical and philosophical ideas around issues of inequality and social justice;
Engage key ideas about policy, policy making and how policy works;
Critically evaluate the impact of key government policies which aim to reduce educational inequalities
Examine the empirical research literature around interventions to reduce educational inequalities
