Description The year 2 Hospital Preparation Course is designed to help students make an effective transition to hospital-based clinical learning. Prior to year 3 students spend the majority of their time at the university. From year 3 onwards students spend most of their time in hospital. This requires students to acquire a new set of learning strategies and skills. Historically many students have struggled in making this adjustment, and have made a slower than may be hoped start to year 3. This component aims to help students understand what is required of them and introduce them to their placement hospital. Students then have the summer break to reflect on the experience. When they return it will be to a place they know, and this should help reduce anxiety.

This placement also ensures students have a thorough induction to their first placement, including such things as fire training and data protection.
Learning Outcomes Note: there are no content focused outcomes because of the diverse nature of the student learning. However, by the end of the component students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how their learning during the first phase of the programme is a vital underpinning for the remaining phases;
  • Demonstrate awareness of the types of knowledge and skills they will be required to develop in the remainder of the programme;
  • Be familiar with the hospital in which they will be placed and begin to understand how they will go about the process of learning in this new environment;
  • Students will also have completed some of the practical and administrative requirements for starting a placement in a hospital.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

All students are required to attend and engage with the Hospital Preparation Course (HPC) at the end of year 2. Failure to do so will result in students not being able to progress to year 3. Students who intercalate are expected to undertake the Hospital Preparation Course again at the end of their intercalation as it is important and required preparation for the first hospital placement and the information needs to be current. This also applies to returning from a period of absence or who are externally taking the second year

Reassessment:

Students are expected to undertake the HPC. If this is not possible then an alternative experience can be arranged
