Description The ILS course has been developed to train healthcare personnel to a higher level than that offered by Basic Life Support training, and to bridge the gap between ‘community’ BLS and ‘in-hospital’ ALS. The ILS course includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation, simple airway management and safe defibrillation (manual and/or AED), and initial management of the acutely ill patient.
The course is run over one day and consists of lectures and practical stations. The manual is forwarded two weeks before the start of the course. Candidates are advised to study this thoroughly. Assessment on the course is continuous in nature and copies of the assessment forms should be forwarded to candidates with their copies of the manual.

All students must successfully complete this module within 12months of graduation. Where students have taken the ILS course in an earlier programme year, the ILS course must be repeated in the final year.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the component students should be able to:
  • Manage patients in cardiac arrest safely and effectively until the arrival of the cardiac arrest team
  • Participate effectively in resuscitation as a member of the cardiac arrest team
