Description

This module follows on directly from RMC and builds on research carried out in semester 1.  Lectures, workshops, two tutorials and online coursework are integrated to enhance your skills as psychological researcher.  Below is a list of some of the topics to be covered:

Research Methods (supported through lectures, RM workshops):

  • Questionnaire design: writing questionnaires
  • Questionnaire design: validity and reliability
  • Factor analysis
  • Relational analyses: Correlation – taking it further, Linear regression, Multiple regression, Logistic regression
  • Introduction to ANCOVA

Mini projects (supported through lectures and MP Workshops):

  • Mini-project 1: Designing and validating a questionnaire
  • Mini-project 2: Designing and running a questionnaire based study
Research Proposal
Research Participation: 10 hours of participation in current research

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge about the concepts and scope of relational approaches in psychological research.
  • Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge in choosing appropriate methods of analysis in different research contexts.
  • Describe and justify the design and validation of their own questionnaire using appropriate written reporting conventions.
  • Carry out and interpret various statistical relational analyses using SPSS.
  • Conduct an appropriately designed research study drawing on relational approaches and describe and justify their own research in the presence of others using standard oral reporting conventions.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment if 03 24686 LI Research Methods D is taken without 03 24684 LI Research Methods C:
1. Quantitative Research Report Portfolio, equivalent to 3000 words maximum (80% of 20 credit module)
2. MCQ Test Portfolio (20% of 20 credit module)
3. Attainment of Research Participation Scheme Credits from Semester 2 [Internal hurdle for this 20 credit module].
