Description Research Methods D continues to work with, and extend upon, research techniques and analytical skills introduced earlier in the programmes. Through pre-session materials, interactive lectures, computer practicals, online tasks, and experiential learning students will continue their journey towards becoming ethical, independent, and proactive researchers. Looking at the science of designing and working with questionnaires, as well as developing theoretical models to understand variation in the human mind, brain and behaviour, students will be introduced to advanced statistical techniques exploring relationships between variables. Students will take part in two research projects. In the first practical, students will develop their own questionnaires and evaluate their effectiveness. The second practical provides a broader scope, and students will develop their own hypotheses, and choose appropriate analytic approaches covered on the module to test these. The module not only prepares students for their final year project but also for future research-related challenges.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the Module, students should be able to:
  • Understand the concepts and scope of relational approaches in neuroscientific/psychological research.
  • Design, pilot, refine and evaluate questionnaires.
  • Carry out and interpret various relational statistical analyses using appropriate software.
  • Conduct and report appropriately designed ethical research studies drawing on relational approaches.
