The module provides an exploration of substantive criminal law (ie, how the law defines and applies offences and defences). The following topics will be covered in a typical year: introduction to theories of criminalisation and punishment; actus reus; mens rea; homicide; offences against the person; sexual offences; property offences; denials of offending; and defences.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Locate and present coherently materials relating to criminal law from primary and secondary sources;
Identify the current state of doctrinal and policy debate on the matters of criminal law covered in this module;
Evaluate the issues of criminal law addressed in the module in terms of doctrinal coherence and the extent to which the law achieves its policy objectives;
Apply knowledge of criminal law to reasonably complex situations;
Explain and defend any personal and reasoned judgements made on issues of criminal law covered in the module and recognise potential alternative conclusions for particular situations and provide supporting reasons for them.
