The radiography module instructs the students in dental radiography and the fundamental ways it links to the study of dental hygiene/therapy. The module consists of lectures and tutorials and gives the student the theoretical and practical experience in the prescribing, taking, processing and interpretation of intra and extra oral radiographs. In addition the theoretical component covers the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 and all associated clinical governance issues. On completion of this module the student is competent to prescribe radiographs and take, process and interpret various film views used in General Dental Practice (Scope of Practice, GDC 2013).
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate competency in taking and processing intra-oral radiographs and orthopantomograms and assessment of image quality of intra-oral radiographs and orthopantomograms and have an understanding of diagnostic imaging systems used in oral health care.
Identify the normal anatomical features shown on radiographs and identify the appearance of common oral pathologies on radiographs and demonstrate understanding of the principles underpinning dental radiographic techniques.
Demonstrate understanding of the hazards associated with the use of ionising radiation and the importance of radiation protection and dose reduction and demonstrate understanding of quality control methods and quality assurance processes required in the safe practice of radiography.
Demonstrate the ability to make personal judgement as the "clinical practitioner" to undertake the most effective method of imaging technique in order to achieve the required outcome for the treatment of the patient.
