Description The Integrated Clinical Practice module offers the forum for the student to apply appropriate models of reflection, practical skill and application of theory to demonstrate competence in the range of duties undertaken by the hygienist/therapist, as agreed by the General Dental Council. Students will understand the presentation and management of those conditions affecting the oral tissues and the relevance of the common oral human diseases encountered by the hygienist / therapist. Students will work on clinics within the Birmingham Dental Hospital and at outreach clinics and will undertake restorative dentistry and the management of plaque related diseases, tooth wear & tooth loss for all patient groups. This module further consolidates the skills acquired in the previous clinical practice modules. Teaching and learning is focused on an understanding of the indications for the use of advanced restorative techniques, as well as competence in the delivery of patient centred oral hygiene and maintenance of restorations and appliances. The student will undertake a greater complexity of restorations and use of materials within the remit of the dental therapist. The module gives the student a broader clinical experience and centres on the team approach to dental practice.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate competence at providing preventive oral care for individual patients who present with periodontal disease, dental caries and tooth surface loss and empower them to take responsibility for their own oral health.
  • Demonstrate competence at interpreting and delivering complex treatment plans incorporating both periodontal and restorative dentistry and arranging appropriate monitoring and review.
  • Demonstrate competence in completing a range of restorative and periodontal procedures in the primary and permanent dentitions.
  • Demonstrate competence in administering local analgesia for pain control and managing fear and anxiety using behavioural techniques.
  • Describe the principles and problems involved in the provision of domiciliary dental care and the role of the Dental Hygienist and Therapist within this environment.
  • Recognise acute oral conditions and act appropriately to ensure these are addressed.
  • Describe the aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation and management of the common diseases of the oral soft tissues and salivary glands.
  • Identify and provide appropriate, immediate management of medical emergencies and be competent at carrying out resuscitation techniques.
  • Demonstrate competence in communicating effectively with patients and their families and carers.
  • Demonstrate competence in maintaining full, accurate and contemporaneous records.
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork and interprofessional communication.
  • Demonstrate reflective practice and personal development planning for improvement.
  • Demonstrate professional attitudes and behaviour, putting patients first and treating them with equality, respect and dignity.
  • Explain the role of Continuing Professional Development, appraisal, training and giving and receiving feedback in personal development.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles of raising concerns where abuse, neglect or poor performance is suspected.
  • Practise evidence- based dentistry and demonstrate personal responsibility for the quality of care given.
  • Practise within the boundaries of information governance, maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and the safe delivery of care including gaining valid, informed consent and handling complaints.
Assessment 26334-01 : Written Papers : Exam (School Arranged) - Written Unseen (50%)
26334-02 : SHoCSA : Exam (School Arranged) - Mixed (50%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessments:
Completion of clinical competency SCOT tests
Demonstration of appropriate profile of clinical experience and satisfactory clinical assessment performance

ICP examinations:
i) written examination 2x 2 hours (50% total marks)
ii) structured holistic care skills assessment (50% total marks)

Pass mark in both components is 50%.
Both components stand alone and no compensation is allowed. A grade of 49% or below in one or both components will result in failure of the examination as a whole.

Reassessment:
The format of the ICP examinations will be repeated in term 10. Candidates will repeat only the section(s) of the examination which they failed at the first sit
