Description Students will practice advanced restorative dentistry on a phantom head to further develop skills in the management of plaque related diseases and tooth surface loss, applying appropriate reflection on the basic skills previously acquired. The teaching and learning is focused on an understanding of the indications for and the practical application of advanced restorative techniques and on developing an understanding of the delivery of patient centred oral hygiene maintenance of restorations and appliances. Students will be introduced to a wide range of dental biomaterials and develop the level of technical skill required to use the materials that are within the remit of the Dental Therapist.

Students will continue to treat patients, providing them with the opportunity to further enhance and develop their knowledge by introducing and developing relevant skills of restorative dentistry in adults. By identifying learning needs from previous and continuing clinical work they will consolidate their expertise in the more simple dental treatments, giving them the sound background to move onto more complex cases in all of the dental specialties. The integrated theoretical, phantom head and clinical teaching in this module, will guide students towards developing the full breadth of knowledge and skills required of the Dental Therapist in General Dental Practice.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of how to complete a range of procedures in restorative dentistry, including the use of appropriate moisture control.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the surgical management of dental caries in permanent teeth, the principles of management of the compromised pulp and the interface between restorative dentistry and periodontal diseases.
  • Demonstrate competence in cavity preparation and placement of a restoration on a phantom head.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the options for restoring / replacing teeth.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the different dental restorative materials available by applying underpinning science and knowledge of their properties and understanding of the rationale behind making appropriate choices of material in the clinical situation.
  • Demonstrate developing confidence in their own judgement.
