Exclusions
Description This module is designed to provide a general understanding of how systemic disease and nutrition impact on oral health. The students will be introduced to the clinical practice area where they will carry out practical work in the relevant aspects of periodontal and preventive treatment, applying the knowledge gained in this and the other first year modules. They will expand and develop their practical skills in the clinical situation establishing the concepts of teamwork and caring for the patient in a professional, competent and skilful manner in the dental environment.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Identify the role of the dental hygienist and therapist and other members of the dental team.
  • Carry out care as prescribed by the dentist and plan the delivery in the most appropriate way for the patient.
  • Recognise the importance of and record a comprehensive and contemporaneous medical and patient history.
  • Describe the importance of extra and intra oral tissue examination recognising abnormalities and raising concerns where appropriate.
  • Explain the principles of preventive care.
  • Describe the use of indices to screen for and monitor periodontal disease.
  • Undertake prescribed non-surgical treatments to remove hard and soft deposits and stains from teeth using a range of methods.
  • Recognise and manage medical emergencies.
  • Explain the importance of and maintain accurate, contemporaneous and comprehensive patient records in accordance with legal and statutory requirements and best practice.
  • Recognise and perform effective decontamination and infection control procedures according to current guidelines.
  • Recognise the importance of care and maintenance of equipment.
  • Have knowledge of how to undertake clinical photography.
Assessment 26339-01 : OSCE : Exam (School Arranged) - Mixed (50%)
26339-02 : Written Paper : Exam (School Arranged) - Mixed (50%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
OSCE examination in term 2, 50% pass mark
1 X 1 hour phantom head skills competency test (SCOT) term 2 awarded pass / fail – 2 attempts allowed
1 X 15 minute CPR skills competency test (SCOT) term 2 awarded pass / fail – 2 attempts allowed
1.5 hour written examination , term 3, 50% pass mark

Reassessment:
OSCE examination re-assessment in term 2, 50% pass mark
1 X 1 hour phantom head skills competency test (SCOT) term 2 awarded pass / fail – 2 attempts allowed
1 X 15 minute CPR skills competency test (SCOT) re-assessment term 2 awarded pass / fail – 2 attempts allowed
1.5 hour written examination, term 3 supplementary period, 50% pass mark
