Description The Oral Health Promotion and Education module focuses on promotion of oral health care and oral health education as prescribed by the dental hygienist/ therapist. This module aims to achieve higher-level competency in all aspect of communication with both patient and other health care professionals. With this module and others the student becomes familiar with the diverse oral health care needs of different social and cultural groups. It also engages the student to critically appraise material disseminated in written form with a systematic review and assessment of current and future methods of working to promote better oral health and provide practical skill, knowledge and understanding.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate competence in the principles of general health promotion and oral health promotion.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of social, cultural and environmental influences on health.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the influence of health services and public policies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of community-based prevention and action.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the strategies that enable prevention of dental disease.
  • Demonstrate competence in the delivery of oral health education and oral promotion to various groups.
