Exclusions
Description The module is designed to assist the learners with their transition into higher education, enabling them to develop some of the skills required on their journey to becoming lifelong learners in healthcare practice. It is designed to develop the self-evaluation, reflective practice and study skills required of the learner in higher education through the use of inter-professional learning, small group work and structured self-directed learning. It aims to develop the skills of communication, time management and critical appraisal. It also introduces the learners to the theory and practice of clinical photography. In addition learners will gain an insight into the concepts of 'professionalism' in healthcare practice with the expectations and responsibilities this entails.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Describe the regulatory function of the General Dental Council and the legal / ethical obligations of registered members of the dental team.
  • Recognise the principles of team working.
  • Show awareness of how to raise concerns about their own or others health, behaviour or professional performance in accordance with GDC regulations.
  • Describe the procedures for handling complaints.
  • Describe procedure for obtaining valid informed patient consent.
  • Describe the procedures for maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate the attribute of professional attitudes and behaviour in patient centred care.
  • Describe the principles of information governance.
  • Retrieve information from a variety of sources.
  • Demonstrate self-evaluation, reflective practice, personal development planning and portfolio development as tools in the management of learning.
  • Describe the range of individual learning styles, the importance of assessment, feedback, critical reflection and appraisal in personal development planning.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety legislation, fire safety, violence and aggression and manual handling as it applies to the dental hygienist therapist.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
Submission of professionalism portfolio of achievement and reflective practice – 50% pass mark

Reassessment:
Resubmission of portfolio in supplementary period 50% capped pass mark
