Exclusions
Description Students will continue to use and develop their clinical knowledge, skills and ethical practice into the paediatric clinical environment. This module encompasses the promotion and maintenance of oral health specific to both the healthy and the medically compromised child. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the general growth and development of the child as well as the recognition of the common disease processes and their preventive and operative management. Taking and analysing radiographs will further develop practical application of radiography. The team based approach to dentistry will also be reinforced throughout the module and evaluation of the work of the Orthodontist and how it interacts with that of the Dental Therapist in maintenance of oral health and progression of orthodontic treatment will also be acknowledged.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of the implications of managing the child patient including the issue of informed consent.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the needs of the medically compromised and special needs child, recognising the need to seek advice where necessary.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the administration of local anaesthesia to a child.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the provision of advanced restorative procedures and the management of trauma in the dentition of the child patient within the remit of the Dental Therapist.
  • Evaluate the indications and contraindications for deciduous extraction, and have a sound knowledge of the theory and practice of such extractions.
  • Discuss the disorders associated with dental exfoliation and eruption and be familiar with normal facial development and occlusion and the adverse effects of malocclusion on oral health.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of diseases of childhood, the oral and dental diseases in childhood and soft tissue pathology in the child.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessment:
1 x open book examination Term 5, 50% passmark
1 x closed book examination Term 6, 50% passmark


50% must be achieved in each examination independently to pass the module overall


Reassessment:
50% must be achieved in each examination independently to pass the module overall

If the student fails the Term 5 open book assessment they will be required to resubmit the assessment following feedback, with the assessment mark capped at 50%
The re-assessment for the closed book examination in Term 6 will be a supplementary sit within the summer supplementary period
