Description This module is designed to give detailed knowledge of the basic concepts of pathology and of the classification, aetiology, pathogenesis and management of periodontal diseases. Students will capitalise on knowledge and experience gained in previous modules, demonstrating the understanding of periodontal disease and its management by the Dental Hygienist / Therapist. The opportunity to enhance root surface debridement skills and anaesthesia will be available by managing patients with advanced disease. An extension of the team approach becomes available during this module by working alongside 5th year BDS at the core site and with clinical supervisors in Outreach Placements in the Community Dental Services. The epidemiology of smoking and its effect on periodontal disease as well as evidence based advice on smoking cessation for patients will be evaluated. Care of patients who have undergone periodontal surgery and advanced periodontal treatment will be taught within the concept of post-operative care. Teaching is delivered from the perspective of the evidence for clinical effectiveness of therapies and the partnership approach to Dental Hygiene and Therapy within the Dental Team.
