Description	The Professional Development Activities (PDA) required component of MBChB 3 is designed to build on the structured professional development which students have gained throughout the first two years of their course. There is no summative assessment. Students will need to evidence due diligence in the PDA, measured by attendance registers and submission of a personal development form, in order to progress to MBChB 4. The PDA provides students at the end of their first full time year of clinical medicine with an opportunity to explore several key themes, which will operate as a menu which students can choose from. First, students will update themselves on professional and legal guidance which has been issued since they completed the formal teaching of these subjects in Year 2 of the course. This will emphasise the need for professionals to maintain their own professional learning requirements. Second, providing guided independent study via e-learning will allow students to develop the skill of independent learning and professional development in a structured way, which will equip them for completely independent learning later in the course and throughout their career. Third, students will select a skills workshop from an extensive list of choices. Some of these workshops cover challenging areas in clinical practice including interaction with patients lacking mental capacity, those with various beliefs and sexual orientation, and refugees. This helps develop the talent of identify learning needs for future clinical years. In addition, they will have the opportunity to select a personal interest activity, from a list of choices, and get in contact with experts to comprehend how professional skills and attitudes can be fostered. These choices will be outside of those conventionally available in a standard medical curriculum such as learning from experts in military and sports medicine, and clinical managers. Fourth, students will have the opportunity to spend 4-5 working days at schools interacting with pupils of age group 5-11years. This aims primarily at empowering and increasing students’ confidence in interacting with children so that improving their interaction and communication in the clinical environment.
Learning Outcomes	By the end of the module students should be able to: Reflect on and discuss the importance of the latest professional guidance issued by the General Medical Council Reflect on and demonstrate an understanding of legal updates which affect the practice of medicine and the provision of health care Recognise the need for lifelong learning and professional development, and identify learning needs for future clinical years. Identify activities most relevant to their current learning needs and interests Work autonomously and as part of a group to undertake selected activities. Build up confidence in interacting with healthy children which would reflect on developing good communication skills in the clinical environment Develop an understanding of the social factors that influence child development and well being
