Description The College of Medical and Dental Sciences is very research active. Medical students should develop an understanding of the nature of the research undertaken. During the research taster students select from a menu offered to their M group a research topic they would like to know more about.

The students then spend some time (approx. 2 hours) with an active researcher in that field, who discusses their research with them, allows them to view experiments being undertaken, (if appropriate) and provides the students with a paper authored by the research group to appraise.

Later on the students and the researcher meet again. The students will discuss their appraisal of the paper with the researcher, and can ask questions about any areas they did not understand.

Students are expected to produce a summary of the article which explains it in a way accessible to an educated person, who is not informed in this field.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the component students should:
  • be able to describe the work of a research group in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences
  • be able to understand the day to day working life of a researcher
  • have developed their ability to appraise academic papers
  • Have improved their ability to describe complicated issues to a lay audience
