Description
Learning and teaching is structured around the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Core Objectives for Chartered Membership. These Core Objectives detail the requirements for Initial Professional Development (IPD) for candidates intending to qualify as Chartered members of the IStructE. The module will cover the following topics:
The IStructE: its history, role, and code of conduct;
Structural materials;
Environmental and sustainability issues and legislation;
Construction systems and techniques;
Law and statutory legislation in structural engineering practice;
Health and Safety requirements and legislation;
Commercial and financial constraints and their impact on structural engineering practice;
Whole-life costing;
Value engineering;
Procurement routes and forms of contracts;
Quality systems in structural engineering practice;
Learning in this module consists of lectures interspersed with seminar tutorials and workshops.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate that they have met the above IStructE’s IPD Core Objectives at the “Awareness” and “Knowledge" levels;
Demonstrate knowledge of structural materials;
Demonstrate awareness and knowledge of social, environmental, ethical, economic, legal and commercial factors and their impact on structural engineering;
Demonstrate understanding of current structural engineering practice.
