Description This module utilises the learning in earlier modules from years 1 to 3, in particular, evidence based medicine and research methods which is undertaken in the first semester of year 3. Working in self-selected groups of between four and five, students will identify their own clinical case, scenario, health services issue or population based health problem to base their evidence review upon. This could be from year 3 clinical experience in hospital or primary care, or a topic area that students have an established specialist interest in (e.g. public health, health service delivery & organisation). Groups will utilise the four As to conduct a detailed evidence review in the form of a 4000 word report in relation to their chosen scenario: Assess - articulate a clear question for the review based on the scenario chosen; Access - construct and conduct relevant literature searches in order to identify relevant evidence, clinical summaries and guidelines; Appraise - critically appraise and review the results of those literature reviews; Act - interpret the evidence in relation to clinical practice and policy; identify areas for future research. Groups will be allocated an advisor (staff within the Institute of Applied Health Research) by the module leads. Advisors will assist with the formulation of review ideas, provide formative support on the linked outline and progress review activity, and one set of detailed comments on a final draft of the evidence review. Groups will submit one report with each student within that group being allocated the same mark. To try to ensure equality of workload, students will be asked as part of their outline plan to provide brief information on what each student will contribute to the project. This will be revisited as part of the progress review activity and formative discussion with their advisor. In addition, students will be asked to submit a contribution statement with their project which will be reviewed by the marker.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Identify and describe a clinical case, scenario, health service issue or population-based health problem that is of interest to you and your group peers
  • Define and articulate a review question related to this case, scenario, issue or problem (Assess)
  • Use and demonstrate a systematic approach to literature searching to identify evidence relevant to the review question including guidelines, systematic reviews, and primary studies (Access)
  • Critically appraise and evaluate the literature using appropriate tools and checklists (Appraise)
  • Critically interpret and articulate the implications of the evidence review in relation to individual clinician and health service policy and practice (Act)
  • Write a concise, clearly articulated and critical evidence review
  • Demonstrate the ability to build positive peer relationships and undertake required team roles to successfully design, deliver and write the evidence review
