Description This is one of two 60-credit modules providing the formal framework for academic assessments of students while on their compulsory placement year (year 3 of the MSci … with Professional Placement courses).

Students will work in Industry, Medical Research, Conservation or another area relevant to their undergraduate studies for a minimum period of 30 weeks. Because of the diverse nature of the work placements, the work undertaken will vary but it will be the responsibility of the School of Biosciences to ensure that it is appropriate. They will perform work and be provided with support and training by the University and placement organisation. They will develop skills to (i) perform a literature review of a related research topic; (ii) plan in detail a research project and (iii) reflect on their contributions to the placement organisation and their personal and professional development.
Learning Outcomes Because of the diverse nature of the work placements, learning outcomes involving knowledge, understanding and technical skill development must be defined for each placement. The process of negotiating these learning outcomes with work placement supervisor and academic tutor will be an important part of the module developing key skills. By the end of the module students should also be able to manage their own development of learning and performance using a full range of resources and seeking and making use of feedback, and communicate effectively in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Reflect on their role within and contribution to the placement organisation
  • Show an understanding of how the placement has contributed to their professional and personal development
  • Carry out a literature review on a topic related to their research project
  • Critically analyse scientific literature
  • Define scientific areas where knowledge is currently lacking and require further research
  • Prepare a detailed plan for a research project
