The Extended Essay provides the opportunity for students to bring together skills in research studied across the three years of the degree. Students will identify a topic that is of interest to them and plan and produce research which interrogates their chosen topic. Students will construct their own arguments and positions on their topic by analysing and reviewing current research on the area of study. The culmination of the research will be the production of a sustained piece of academic work where the student presents their findings professionally.
Students will be required to demonstrate learner independence throughout the module, but will also be allocated a project supervisor who will support them throughout the process of producing their extended essay, with students normally receiving four half-hour supervisions across the academic year, one of those supervisions normally falling in one half of each semester. Supervisions will be linked to specific formative assignments, as well as being supplemented by a series of research skills workshops, which will look at the stages of developing a research project, doing the research, planning and drafting, and preparing the final submission.
