Description This module is designed for those supervising, developing and assessing the practice of social work students and other learners. This is both a theoretical and experiential module, which offers participants the opportunity not only to identify and practice the skills of developing, supervising and assessing learners in the workplace, but also to bring an evaluative approach to the impact of education on practice. This applies particularly to supervision and assessment in diverse settings, which promotes equality of opportunity and anti-oppressive practice.

Practice educators who have successfully passed this module will have sufficient experience and have demonstrated competence to directly supervise, teach and assess social work students. They will have demonstrated and provided evidence of how they met the stage 1 Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPS) and shown a sound value base as a practice educator. Practice educators with this module may contribute to a final placement but will not be able to take full responsibility for assessment or act as the practice educator on a day-to-day basis. They will need stage 2 to be able to take responsibility for this. They will be able to take full responsibility for any other student or be involved in the learning of a final year student.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically evaluate their teaching practice through critical reflection, direct observation, student evaluation, and critical engagement with pedagogic literature and the Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPS).
  • Demonstrate and critically appraise the development of their own teaching capabilities, skills and their understanding and application of the values for practice educators and supervisors.
  • Design and implement an evidence-based learning programme in relation to the appropriate practice framework for social work students with a Practice Learning Opportunity.
  • Demonstrate an ability to make accurate assessment decisions of a social work student’s practice using an evidence-based assessment strategy involving evidence from the Practice Learning Opportunity and engagement with pedagogic and social work literature.
  • Demonstrate an ability to develop knowledge and continuing performance as a Practice Educator
