Description This module is designed to develop and enhance the professional and academic skills students need to acquire as a foundation for their learning in all disciplines and as proto-professionals. In particular it will require students to reflect on how they learn, develop skills in finding, critically appraising and presenting information in a variety of formats. It will help students develop their academic writing skills and will introduce students to concepts of professionalism and patient safety. Additionally this will develop students’ ability to integrate their learning across academic disciplines in order that they can develop a more holistic approach to patient care.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
Doctor as a scholar and scientist
  • Demonstrate an ability to understand and use scientific and medical terminology appropriate to the subjects being studied
  • Analyse clinical problems in a holistic and integrated way to identify the salient features worthy of investigation
  • Formulate simple relevant research questions to allow the appropriate investigation of the problems raised in clinical scenarios
  • Identify appropriate source of information and demonstrate the ability to search effectively for relevant items of interest
  • Apply findings from the literature to answer questions raised by specific clinical problems
  • Demonstrate an understanding of communication theory and skills and their fundamental importance to clinical practice
  • Demonstrate a developing understanding of how people learn
Doctor as a practitioner
  • Demonstrate an ability to use and apply basic science principles to investigate specially constructed clinical scenarios
  • Demonstrate an ability to interpret clinical data to aid in the diagnosis and management of patients described in specially constructed clinical scenarios.
Doctors as a professional
  • Use information effectively in a learning context, making use of ICT to support learning
  • Demonstrate the skills and attitudes required to make appropriate use of the opportunities presented by a range of learning opportunities and show an ability to establish the foundations for lifelong learning through appropriate reflection on learning and learning needs
  • Demonstrate an ability to function as a mentor or teacher, including giving presentations, or providing learning material in other forms, and including the ability to give constructive and appropriate feedback to colleagues
  • Demonstrate a developing knowledge of the roles fulfilled by other health care professionals in a range of clinical environments
  • Demonstrate a developing understanding of the organisation of the NHS and health care provider bodies in primary, secondary and tertiary care, and an awareness of service improvement, patient safety and leadership agendas.
Assessment 27901-01 : PAS Overall : Exam (Centrally Timetabled) - Written Unseen (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions 1) A written report on an aspect of learning (1500 words) 50%

2) 1 x 1 hour 15 mins Integrated Problems examination, including: 1 x scenario based questions requiring students to examine and explore clinically-based issues from a variety of perspectives (25%)

3) 1 x group presentation (Integrated Problems) (25%) The written report has to be passed at 50% (based on performance descriptors). The two IP components must be passed at 50% (components are equally weighted
