This module examines how theatre events can be analysed and conceptualised. It aims to equip students with a basic understanding of the relationship between theatre, culture, performance, and ideology. The module investigates the theatre event in several contexts: as a changing form of social practice, as a performative occasion that brings participants together in historically-specific ways, and as an object that can be theorised using a variety of critical approaches. Over the course of the module, students develop an awareness of and the ability to apply different methodological approaches to their own work and the work of others.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of how theory has always been in ‘dialogue’ with theatre and performance;
Demonstrate an understanding of key theoretical concepts which are connected to theatre and performance analysis;
Apply appropriate critical frameworks to the analysis of contemporary performance.
