Description This required component ensures that students are taught clinical procedural skills mandated by the GMC in Tomorrow’s Doctors 2009, and undertake relevant observed practice. During year 4 students continue to use the clinical procedural skills passport they were issued in year 3. This allows the students to record the teaching they have had and to record the observed practice they have undertaken. Observing assessors will only sign the passport if the student performs the procedure to a satisfactory standard. Students are also required to input the data from their passport onto an online database, so that progress can be centrally monitored. The data held in the database will be reported to the Year 4 Exam board, and students who have not met the requirements, will be required to complete the passport to a satisfactory level before being allowed to proceed to year 5
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module (for the blueprinted procedures) students should be able to:
  • Explain the indications, relevant anatomy and techniques for the procedure;
  • Undertake relevant pre-procedure preparation;
  • Demonstrate the technical ability necessary to undertake the procedure;
  • Explain and demonstrate infection control procedures relevant to a procedure;
  • Undertake relevant post procedure management;
  • Communicate with patients effectively and sensitively;
  • Describe the use of appropriate analgesia or safe sedation when appropriate;
  • Obtain consent appropriate to the procedure under supervision;
  • Explain when and how to seek help should it be needed;
  • Consider patient’s emotional and physical comfort and act accordingly.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

Students must demonstrate that they have undertaken sufficient observed practice. (Because of the way the passport only allows clinicians to sign the passport if the procedure is completed satisfactorily this ensures students are developing their competence.) ‘Sufficient’ is regarded as 75% of the expected total of all observed practice required and 66% for each procedure

Reassessment:

Students will be required to undertake the necessary practice to make good any deficit between the amount of observed practice required and that which they have undertaken by the point at which the data is extracted from the database before they are able to progress to year 5. Students will be provided with clinical experiences to allow them to do this.
