Neuroscience Methods 1 extends research techniques and skills introduced during Year 1 research methods modules. Through interactive lectures, computer practicals, online tasks and experiential learning, students will build on introductory research methods modules to take a more critical and responsible approach to being an ethical, independent, and proactive researcher. Looking at sophisticated research designs and approaches, students will participate in a practical research project to develop quantitative research skills to enable the testing of hypotheses bringing together more than one factor. Throughout the module, students will have the opportunity to develop their insights into the human mind, brain and behaviour, enhance their ethical practice, and work on developing professional presentation skills (e.g. through writing formal research reports to suit specific needs). These opportunities are essential in preparing students for their final year research project or future professional research practice.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the Module, students should be able to:
Explain key concepts underlying quantitative research methodologies
Choose and apply relevant forms of analysis (quantitative).
Conduct and report appropriately designed, ethical research studies (quantitative)
Carry out and interpret inferential analyses using appropriate software tools.
Assessment: 1. Quantitative Research Report, 2000 words (1080% of 10 credit module)
2. Research Participation [Internal hurdle for this 10-credit module].
Method of Reassessment:
1. Quantitative Research Report, 2000 words (100% of 10 credit module)
2. Essay alternative assessment for the research participation credits [Internal hurdle; 0% of 20-credits].
