Description Students choose a host university which is:
1. Approved by the UoB International Office within the Study Abroad and Exchanges scheme, and
2. Deemed by the Departmental International / Year Abroad Officer to offer modules relevant to the students UoB degree programme and comparable with modules offered at UoB.

Students will spend the third year of their degree at an approved overseas institution taking modules that are directly relevant to their Birmingham programme, prior to returning to complete the final year of their degree at the University of Birmingham. The choice of modules is subject to the approval of the Departmental International / Year Abroad Officer.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the modules studied at the host institution.
  • Demonstrate acquisition and consolidation of the skills developed by the modules studied at the host institution.
  • Demonstrate responsibility and independence in their learning.
Assessment 28773-01 : Overall Mark : Coursework (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Students need to take 30 ECTS (or equivalent) per semester. The Year Abroad will be assessed on a pass/fail basis only. Further information on assessing the Year Abroad can be found in the Code of Practice on Taught Programme and Module Assessment and Feedback.

Assessment: The student is expected to undertake assessment in accordance with normal practice at the host institution. Students are assessed as per the specified requirements for the modules they choose to take at the host institution.

Reassessment: It will normally only be necessary for a student to retake modules failed as part of the semester abroad if this results in the overall average for the 120 credit Year Abroad Module falling below 40. The Departmental International / Year Abroad Officer would discuss with the International Office what resit opportunities would need to be provided by the Department (not the host institution) on a case-by-case basis, and depending on credit weighting of the modules taken at the host institution.

Should a student fail this module, they will transfer (back) to the equivalent non-Year Abroad programme and no record of the Year Abroad will appear on their degree certificate.
