Description It is important for students intending to work with and for the most vulnerable members of society to develop a critical understanding of the part society and social policy play in creating and framing the problems that people face. A failure to develop an understanding of this can lead students to respond to social problems as problems with individuals, which itself can be problematic. A range of sociological and social policy perspectives and methodological approaches are available to help make sense of the social issues faced by people who may be using social care services.

This module explores the relationship between social problems, social policy and social work intervention in contemporary society through a series of 5 case studies on various topics of current interest, for example poverty, migration and health.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Understand the complex nature of social issues and recognise connections between daily experiences and larger social forces.
  • Identify, understand and critically explore the contested nature of policy interventions.
  • Understand the significance of rights, justice and economic wellbeing for social policy and social work practice
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of social policy on people’s lives.
  • Demonstrate they understand and are working towards Social Work England’s professional standards in readiness for their application for registration.
