Description Introduction to the law of tort, including its historical origins, its theoretical underpinnings and its aims and functions; negligence, including public authority liability and liability in respect of omissions, psychiatric harm and pure economic loss; and nuisance.

In addition at least one of the following topics will be covered:
alternative compensation systems;
intentional torts;
defamation.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the issues covered in the module in their social, economic and historical context;
  • Make independent and reasoned judgements on the issues covered in the module;
  • Apply the knowledge acquired to reasonably complex situations and supply reasons to support conclusions;
  • Identify, analyse and critically evaluate the rules and principles of law; policy issues and trends in judicial decision making, covered in the module;
  • Synthesise and convey coherently, in both written and oral formats, materials from primary and secondary sources to make independent and reasoned judgements on the issues covered in the module;
  • Coherently present materials from primary and secondary sources to make independent and reasoned judgements on the principles and issues covered in the module.
