Description This module builds and reinforces the general clinical experience that the student will already have gained in the Clinical Core 4 module.

A main aim of the module is to ensure students are fully prepared and able to successfully progress into the next stage of teaching or to become ‘New Doctors’.

Students have one short term hospital placement and there will be a Head of Academy and Senior Academy Tutor who oversees the provision of experience at the placement.

Students may also be required to have a community-based medicine placement.
Learning Outcomes The doctor as a scholar and scientist
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic sciences and the key concepts of clinical sciences and apply them in their clinical learning in the clinical settings encountered IN the relevant clinical year; recognising the importance of both to the study of medicine and to clinical practice in all settings
  • Demonstrate a scientific understanding of an agreed range of common and less common diseases, their causes and prevention, mechanisms ,clinical presentation, investigation and evidence-based management in the specialist and primary care clinical setting
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the physical, psychological, sociological factors influencing mental health, and the psychological and social effects of serious physical illness and hospitalisation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how population health is applied in prevention and management of disease in the clinical settings.
The doctor as a practitioner
  • Demonstrate and continue to develop: good interpersonal/communication skills when dealing with patients and their families in the clinical settings and when undertaking and recording a physical and mental state examination as appropriate to the setting and the circumstance.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking in synthesising the information gained from the patient are carer, considering possible diagnoses and proposing investigations which may confirm or support a diagnosis / exclude other diagnoses or narrow the diagnostic field
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the involvement of the patient and their family in decisions about their clinical management and a recognition of the particular responsibilities placed on the doctor in those limited circumstances where this is not possible
  • Demonstrate the required progress / competence in the range of clinical procedures as set out in the Clinical Skills Passport, showing an understanding of the use of the procedure in common situations.
  • Practice as a clinical learner in a manner that demonstrates awareness of and commitment to the patient safety agenda as it applies to the particular circumstances of their clinical placements: ensuring that all precautions are taken to minimise the particular risks inherent in the individual clinical environment.
The doctor as a professional
  • Use information effectively in a clinical learning context, making use of ICT to support clinical learning and recognising the growing importance of ICT in clinical management.
  • Meet the requirements of confidentiality / data protection legislation and codes of practice for the Clinical Placement and the MBChB programme, demonstrating recognition of the importance of these matters in professional learning and practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to the ethical and legal principles which inform and regulate professional learning and practice, and behaviour in relation to patients, fellow health care workers and the general public.
  • Demonstrate the skills and attitudes required to make appropriate use of the opportunities presented by the clinical environment.
  • Reflect on current clinical practice and acquiring, assessing, applying and integrating new practice and develop the skills of Continuing Professional Development.
  • Demonstrate a developing knowledge of the roles fulfilled by other health care professionals and a commitment to working effectively as part of the multi-professional team.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the organisation of the NHS and health care provider bodies in primary, secondary and tertiary care, and an awareness of and commitment to the service improvement agenda.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the current limits of their professional competence and a commitment to working within these.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

This module is a “top up” for students who have not completed all aspects of the summative assessment for module 22327 who need current clinical skills practice. The summative assessments would be those detailed in module 22327, which are incomplete or need refresher and the co-requisite modules listed above. Students will be registered for the relevant assessments associated with module 22327 (if required) upon receipt of confirmation from Trust staff that satisfactory attendance and appropriate professional behaviours have been demonstrated during the placement.

Reassessment:

This is an experiential module with assessment of competence being sign off by a clinician who has worked closely with the student. If they could not sign off the student they would have to undertake a longer placement.
