Description This develops the theory and practice in an applied setting of the areas sports’ knowledge (e.g. sociology, motor learning, psychology) involved in the coaching and participation process. The sociological aspect of this module is intended to develop the existing knowledge levels of those interested in issues that surround sports participation. Using sociological and coaching theories the module will look at current comparative, political and social trends in sport by different social groups (in particular young people), the factors that influence participation, and the concepts that underpin successful coaching practice and sports organisation. The module will examine participation, drop out and issues of sports 'membership', and will analyse these concepts from the viewpoint of participants, coaches and sports administrators.
The module also looks at the theory and application of sport science in assisting and improving coaching methodology. Theoretical areas covered include motor learning, biomechanics and psychology.
The academic literature and theories in these areas will be discussed in relation to current coaching practices. The concepts and theories will be studied in relation to their use in different sports specific coaching situations e.g. individual / group coaching; elite / amateur / recreational.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Create practical guidance for the public on player development
  • Examine the importance of support networks in player development
  • Contrast the differing models of player and participant development between sports
  • Integrate aspects of best-practice from other sports to their own sport environment
  • Apply differing theoretical perspectives in critiquing player development in sport.
