Description
This module is designed to introduce students to psychological approaches to human development across the life span. The specific focus is on psychology applied to social work. Lectures and small group work will support students to develop an understanding of psychology and its relevance for specific purposes. The teaching will introduce students to psychology as a discipline, its core perspectives and methods. Students will be supported to consider human development across the lifespan, covering development in childhood, adolescence and younger, middle and older adulthood. Understanding individuals in the context of their life-span, and their experiences of normative and non-normative transitions will be canvassed. Addressing issues of diversity and development will be integrated throughout the teaching sessions. At all points teaching is directed towards supporting the use of psychology to think about and understand experiences of care and welfare, and students are encourageds to draw on their own previous learning and experiences to help them evaluate the theories explored in sessions.
