Description This course transfers material currently delivered at Level I to a new Level C set of learning outcomes, and its redesign is part of a comprehensive rearticulation of how the staging of interdisciplinary study is developed with and delivered to students in LANS.

This course has two main aims: first, students will develop some key study skills; secondly, they will carry out research on a social issue and research into the issue from a multidisciplinary perspective.

By concentrating on a social issue, student-led research and learning, group work and multidisciplinary research, the service learning aspect of LANS’ ethos is embedded in the Level C curriculum.

At the end of the module, they will prepare an e-portfolio report on their social issue.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • demonstrate the transferable skills of self-management, learning, communication, problem-solving and information technology
  • demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of the research theme for the year and its relation to public policy
  • use appropriate data-gathering and analysis techniques to explore an aspect of this theme independently;
  • demonstrate competence in the planning, organisation and presentation of a substantial research project.
