Description This module offers students the opportunity to develop themselves as powerful speakers, bringing their growing expertise in identifying and evaluating relevant interdisciplinary approaches to bear on challenges relevant to the wider community. This gives them an opportunity to apply their learning, to understand their ability to make an impact on real-world problems, and to understand the reality of how change is made to happen.

Research and communication are at the heart of this module. Students work with members of the LANS academic team and with the support and guidance of relevant external expertise. Typically, the module involves some whole group lectures/training and briefing sessions, and some small group work. The module trains students to work as model policy development teams responding to selected issues; typically associated with visits to local organisations. Students will respond to the feedback from external partners in the development of their policy paper. This gives students the opportunity to identify and develop creative solutions that represent benefit for a range of stakeholders, and to gain experience in working practically with a range of real-world agenda.

Central to this module is the development of transferable skills, and the module provides opportunities for students to develop skills of:
  • self-management (such as setting personal objectives, managing time and tasks and identifying and implementing personal learning strategies);
  • learning skills (such as independent study, library skills and other information gathering skills );
  • communication (such as fluency in writing and presenting a coherent argument);
  • problem solving (such as conceptual thinking, identifying strategic options for study and evaluating the use of different approaches to an issue).;
  • information technology (such as using IT and other technologies as research tools; accessing specialist sites relevant to assignments, and practising information retrieval)
  • group work (such as negotiating shared objectives and outcomes, inter-group communication, and leadership of particular workstreams)
  • presentation skills.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • demonstrate the transferable skills of communication, problem-solving and information technology
  • demonstrate the ability to engage critically with issues around social action
  • use IT tools in their data collection and analysis;
  • critically engage with the principles of peer assessment
  • Conduct data-collection and confidently analyse results
  • demonstrate competence in the planning, organisation and presentation of a substantial research project.
  • collaborate with external partners
