Description
This option explores Rome as an international power in the Mediterranean from the Mid-Republic to the creation of the imperial system. The focus will be on understanding the formal processes through which Rome negotiated power and declared war in order to interact with foreign states, as well as the ideology of ‘empire’ that delivered.Students will be expected to engage with and understand the historical value of a range of evidence: both literary and non-literary, and material culture.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
demonstrate an understanding of Rome’s position in relation to other Mediterranean powers over time
analyse the rituals Rome used to formalise negotiations and declarations of war and peace
evaluate models of ‘imperialism’ and ‘IR Theories’ in relation to the primary material
communicate own interpretation of the sources in relation to the main themes of the module
