An introduction to understandings of God in the modern Christian traditions. Primary texts will be selected from classic principal texts in the modern period, of which three will be selected in any iteration of the module.
Indicative texts include Descartes Meditations, Spinoza Ethics, Leibniz Monadology (or Theodicy), Locke Reasonableness of Christianity, Hobbes LeviathanBerkeley Dialogues, Vico New Science, Hume Dialogues / ‘On Miracles’, Kant Excerpts from Transcendental Dialectic (from Critique of Pure Reason), Hegel Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion (excerpts from Parts I and III), Schelling Freedom Essay, Kierkegaard Either Or / Concluding Unscientific Postscript
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
elaborate the principal arguments attributed to the set texts
clearly and explicitly distinguish between the plain sense of the primary texts and the interpretations of the commentary traditions
rehearse rival interpretations of the primary texts and adjudicate between them
One commentary of 1500 words on a set gobbet (25%) One essay of 2500 words or one commentary of 2,500 words on set gobbet (a choice of at least two gobbets, different from above) (75%)
