Description This module will introduce you to some key aspects of the field of Christian Ethics, including its sources, methods, insights and a range of different topics – some of which are as old as Christianity itself; others have emerged during different stages throughout Christianity’s historical development and have gained more prominence within the contemporary setting. The module provides the opportunity to think deeply about ethical issues while sampling a variety of significant texts and ideas. It includes exploring relevant passages from the Bible, from the writings of the Church Fathers as well as from different other past and current contributors to the field of Christian Ethics. By virtue of its nature, and particularly in light of the topics that it engages, as a field Christian Ethics interacts with many other fields – for example, philosophy, political science, economics, psychology, sociology, biology, medicine, ecology and environmental studies. The interaction of Christian Ethics with this broad array of other disciplines creates opportunities for engaging and exciting academic projects, generating insights that have a viable socio-political, economic and environmental impact and can induce authentic social transformation. It is not accidental then that the field of Christian Ethics is viewed as the location where Christian theology makes its impact upon the world – a theology that strives for social justice and seeks the wellbeing and flourishing of all humanity.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Outline some of the main distinctive features of Christian ethics
  • Explain some of the main elements that contribute to the norms and methods of Christian ethics
  • expound how Christian ethics relates to other ethical systems, methods and insights
  • Develop an ethically informed argument
  • Identify some of the strengths and weaknesses of a range of commonly used arguments and positions, identifying some of the assumptions, norms and values that underlie them
