Description The module will help students to explore how writers, working in a variety of genres and styles from different historical periods from the Renaissance to the development of Realism interacted with and responded to the socio-political, economic, historical and cultural circumstances and crises of their time. In certain cases, historical concepts of French and European superiority are interrogated. Students will also be able to investigate how some of these texts have in turn undergone and continue to undergo transformative processes of adaptation (e.g. as film, stage performance, bande dessinée.). They will accordingly be able to understand the significance of the context in which adaptation occurs as well as the original context in which the text was composed.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • read and interpret in their contexts an appropriate selection of texts written before 1900.
  • demonstrate a knowledge and an understanding of major intellectual currents of the early modern period and the 19th century as they relate in particular to French society and culture
  • begin to demonstrate some understanding of how texts can be adapted
