Description This is a placement module, beginning with six weeks of lectures on topics delivered by Birmingham Services for Education staff, followed by four weeks of placement in full-class instrumental lessons. The lectures will cover topics such as whole-class instrumental teaching, improvisation and creativity, vocal workshops, and small-group teaching.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • identify and discuss key issues in music education such as choral teaching, whole-class teaching, improvisation and app based learning, Special/Additional Educational Needs (SEN/AEN) and group-learning strategies.
  • explain how to lead activities such as a warm-up exercise in a full class environment, drawing on an understanding of ‘best practice’ developed (where possible) through placement experience.
  • evaluate methods used in teaching school children musical skills such as performing, improvising, composing and listening.
