This is a placement module, beginning with six weeks of lectures on topics delivered by Birmingham Services for Education staff, followed by four weeks of placement in full-class instrumental lessons. The lectures will cover topics such as whole-class instrumental teaching, improvisation and creativity, vocal workshops, and small-group teaching.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
identify and discuss with some sophistication key issues in music education such as choral teaching, whole-class teaching, improvisation and app based learning, Special/Additional Educational Needs (SEN/AEN) and group-learning strategies.
explain articulately how to lead activities such as a warm-up exercise in a full class environment, drawing on an understanding of ‘best practice’ developed (where possible) through placement experience.
evaluate rigorously methods used in teaching school children musical skills such as performing, improvising, composing and listening.
