Description This module introduces the topic of Project Management by presenting four main areas of inquiry:
1. What is a project?,
2. From chaos to control,
3. Where do projects come from? and
4. Key first role of a project manager.

These areas set the stage for the students to become familiar with current thinking, methodologies, and approaches to project management and to set themselves firmly within the field.

The aim of the module is to make the students acquainted with the fundamental concepts, definitions, and framework for understanding projects, their genesis, their purposes and their life cycles.

An important section is devoted to the key leadership and team management role of the project manager. A critical aspect of the course is a dialectical perspective, to encourage the students to challenge accepted views and to reflect on their own professional positioning and development.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Define a project and describe challenges of various project types and structures.
  • Contrast various project and programme management approaches and identify strengths and weaknesses
  • Understand the use of a business case and value and benefits management to ensure successful delivery of projects. Assess business cases using quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Understand the fundamental aspects of the role of sponsors, steering groups and stakeholders in projects
  • Understand and apply the concepts of organisational maturity models and audit review to projects.
  • Understand the role of project managers and the project teams in the context of project culture, personalities and behaviours and teamwork.

A minimum mark of 50% is given to students who write otherwise acceptable assignment submissions, but who fall short of accepted academic integrity standards. This is because of the diverse educational background of students and their business experience where plagiarism is not seen as a problem.

It is a safety net for this module only (the first on the programme). Students who fall short on academic integrity are given feedback, and are told what sanction would apply if this practice occurs in future submitted work.

Reassessment:

The students will be able to resubmit their work at a suitable time after the prescribed deadline. The online discussion will be able to be reopened for them to engage with and the teaching staff will monitor and intervene in it, if necessary.
