Description
Investments is intended for undergraduate students interested in a career in finance. A sound investment decision requires knowledge of financial markets, analytical thinking and mathematical derivation.
The module focuses on an empirical knowledge of financial markets, application of financial theories, quantitative skills for estimation and optimization, and analytical tools for data analysis.
Students learn how to allocate assets in fixed income, stock, and option markets, and how to manage their investment between domestic and foreign markets. Theories and concept such as efficient market hypothesis, term structure, mutual funds, active portfolio management, are hedge funds are introduced in this module.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Understand a range of financial theories and concepts, such as efficient market hypothesis, term structure, mutual funds, active portfolio management, hedge funds.
Students determine how to allocate their assets among bonds, stocks and futures.
Use the computer tools such as STATA or Excel to analyse the price, trading volume, and financial reporting data to assess the performance of investments.

Assesment: Assignments/projects (20%)
Mid-term exam (20%): a 2 hour examination
Final exam (60%): a 2 hour examination
Reassessment (where allowed): a 2 hour resit examination (100%).
