Description This module will introduce students to relevant concepts from linguistics and grammatical systems that will help them to conceptualise and describe translation as a process and a product. An understanding of linguistic concepts is a useful toolkit that will give students a vocabulary and a conceptual framework to help them become better translators and to describe and reflect constructively on both their own translation practice and existing translations.

Topics covered may include: words and meanings, collocation, coherence and cohesion, pragmatics and sociolinguistics. Classes will focus upon examples in English, since the cohort will not have a shared second language. However, they will be required to produce examples in their language(s) of study.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Describe the relevant concepts from linguistics covered in the module
  • Use these concepts to inform their own translation practice
  • Use these concepts to describe and evaluate their own translation practice and that of other translators
