Description This module will introduce students to different types of audiovisual translation. It will examine theoretical and practical issues involved in audiovisual communication, highlighting the needs of different users and showcasing a variety of routes into the translation profession. In addition to plenary sessions and autonomous group tasks, guided workshops will not only explore the linguistic and intercultural challenges associated with communicating visual and aural codes (e.g. body language, cultural references, taboo words, humour), but also offer hands-on experience of dealing with the practical processes and technical constraints routinely encountered in the language services industry.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of audiovisual translation specialism studied on the module;
  • demonstrate an awareness of the needs of specific users (e.g. the visually impaired);
  • extract the essence of audiovisual texts and reformulate that information in accordance with the principles and formal conventions of the mode of translation in question;
  • evaluate and choose appropriate strategies for dealing with a range of linguistic, intercultural and technical challenges encountered in the course of workshop and autonomous work.
