Description The module aims to provide students with facility in orchestrating examples of music from Classical style to present times; to sharpen the ear and improve command of harmony and counterpoint, musical notation, calligraphy, and the presentation of scores and parts. The module covers basic techniques of scoring for strings, woodwind, brass and percussion Examples of instrumental scoring by a range of composers will be examined in class or prescribed for private study.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • display some fundamental skills of the professional orchestrator in work for smaller ensembles.
  • demonstrate skills of the professional transcriber in work for smaller ensembles
  • show an understanding of some of the fundamental elements of orchestration including balance, blend, doublings, clear delineation of backgrounds and foregrounds and the use of texture to articulate form in orchestrating for a small ensemble.
  • write idiomatically for the different instruments and sections in the orchestra.
